One monkey that's not celebrating: the brass one I saw this morning looking for his balls.
Yup: -7°F, folks, with a wind chill of -27. It's colder than a witch's...er, colder than my...eh, fuck it, you get the idea. The predicted high today is 5.

Posted by Frida Peeple at January 22, 2004 08:25 AMJust an entry from the 'Why the hell would I want to know THAT?' department:
In days of yore on ships with cannons, they had a hell of a time keeping the cannon balls from rolling around. So they made a brass plate called a monkey that had divots in it to hold the stack of cannon balls stationary.
Segue to metalurgical lesson...
Brass contracts at a faster rate than iron when subjected to extreme cold. So when it got really cold out, the iron cannon balls would pop off the brass monkey.
So, now you know...
'How cold was it???'
